Big Screen to Broadway Stage

A long history of stars born on Broadway stages that made it big in the big screen movie world is available, but then there are the movie actors that made the leap from the big screen to the show stages.

Starting off with Katie Holmes, Mrs Cruise made her breakthrough in Dawson’s Creek, which was aired from 1998 to 2003 and has also appeared in a string of films since then. Katie made her Broadway debut as Ann Deever in the revival of Arthur Miller’s play called All My Sons.
Before the current Mrs Cruise made the leap to Broadway, there was another Mrs Cruise who caught the stage spotlight. Nicole Kidman made in debut on Broadway in 1998 in The Blue Room in a skin baring role and she claims it helped her in her film career to gain more challenging roles.

Katie Holmes

The sweetheart of America’s cinema Julia Roberts made her debut on Broadway in a 2006 production called Three Days of Rain, which was at the Bernard B Jacobs theatre. She starred alongside actors Bradley Cooper and Paul Rudd. Rudd is no stranger to the stage himself and appeared in Twelfth Night and The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Julia Roberts starred in megahit movies that included Pretty Woman in 1990, Erin Brockovich in 200 and Steel Magnolias in 1989 to name just a few.

Another dancing, singing acting star to add to the column is Lipstick Jungle actress Brooke Shields. The actress have played in a few plays, which includes Chicago, Wonderful Town and Cabaret and more. Brooke debuted on the stage playing Rizzo in a revived production of Grease in 1995. She is famous for movies such as Running Wild in 1992, The Blue Lagoon 1980 and Suddenly Susan.

Jennifer Garner married to Ben Affleck is an honouree Beantown gal and made her way to the stage in 2008. She played Roxanne opposite Kevin Kline in a production called Cyrano de Bergerac.

Elizabeth Taylor who made name for herself in 1966 in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Butterfield 8 in 1966 and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1958 made her debut in Broadway in a show called The Little Foxes in 1981. The 2 time award winner also appeared in Giant 1956, A Place in the Sun in 1951 and Cleopatra in 1963.

Kathleen Turner, appeared in the show called Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and earned a Tony Award for her debut performance. She by then already had a very impressive filmography. She also later played the infamous Mrs Robinson in The Graduate on stages in both New York and London. The 2002 Broadway show also starred Jason Biggs and the show debut performance of Alicia Silverstone alongside the seductive Turner. She also played in movies such as Peggy Sue Got Married 1986, Romancing the Stone in 1989 and The War of the Roses in 1989.

Oscar Winner, Jessica Lange made her debut as Dwan in the 1976 dino De Laurentiis produced remake of King Kong and has appeared in numerous films. In 1992 alongside Alec Baldwin in A Streetcar Named Desire, Lange took to the stage and in 2005 she played in The Glass Menagerie with Christian Slater. Jessica Lange featured in movies such as Blue Sky in 1994, Tootsie in 1982 and Country in 1984.
